10 Ways To Spend A Special 2018 Mother’s Day In Tokyo

There shouldn’t be only one day in the year to celebrate Mother’s Day, but since we have a designated date anyway, it’s worth making that day a tad more special than usual. While a typical Mother’s Day celebration in Japan extends to presenting carnations and sweets, if you want to go the extra mile for your mother, sister, friend, wife, partner, yourself, or any other woman that you’d like to celebrate on this day, we’ve put together some of Tokyo’s best specials and ideas for this year’s Mother’s Day — which falls on this Sunday, May 13.

1. Enjoy a luxurious afternoon tea at The Peninsula Tokyo

For this year’s Mother’s Day, The Peninsula has partnered with the prestigious porcelain brand Wedgwood to offer an exclusive and elegant Afternoon Tea Set for women who appreciate aesthetics just as much as they do food. Seasonal sweet-and-savory treats will be elegantly served on the finest, bespoke Wedgwood teaware featuring luxury bone china crockery, alongside a selection of premium teas. Guests will also receive a special takeaway gift item of Wedgwood tea.

For Mother’s Day, the chefs at The Grand Hyatt’s well-known teppanyaki restaurant Keyakizaka will prepare a premium tasting course featuring luxurious ingredients such as caviar, foie gras, abalone, Ise-ebi lobster and two types of wagyu beef grilled to perfection. If that’s not enough, stop by at the hotel’s pastry boutique Fiorentina and grab one of the exclusively crafted sweets, including a dome-shaped flower cake decorated with pink buttercream, a classic butter cake topped with vibrant rose-shaped candy sculptures and a colorful gift box filled with a variety of sweets including four different kinds of seasonal pound cakes.

If you want to give the gift of a well-deserved pampering session rather than a single carnation, Nua is offering a free Dermalogica MicroZone treatment with every ¥10,000 gift card purchased for Mother’s Day. Each MicroZone Treatment targets specific areas of concern that will refresh and leave the skin looking instantly healthier in only 20 minutes. The gift card recipient can choose any treatments the salon offers while the free bonus lets them choose between five MicroZone treatments. All gift cards purchased from now until May 13 also get a 5 percent discount. #Priceless

This one is for the two of you. Together. There’s no need to be an experienced painter (or a wine drinker), just drop by at this cool place in Daikanyama and let your creativity flow (under, of course, the guidance of experienced and bilingual instructors). The theme on this Mother’s Day will be “Bouquet,” which lets you give your mother an everlasting bouquet of flowers that will bloom in her room all year long. The painting session is accompanied with a glass of wine and some snacks. All materials are provided, too, so just drop by (after booking here.)

Where: ArtBar Daikanyama, 7-2 Daikanyamacho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
How much: ¥5,000

7. Get a box of Lola’s famous cupcakes

Does mom love sharing her gifts? Bring her some of Lola’s Mother’s Day-limited handmade cupcakes home. Delicious, ultra pretty and oh-so-Instagrammable, this will be a great treat for the whole family if you choose to spend the holiday at home with some tea and Netflix.

When: Now until Sun, May 13, 2018.
Where: Lola’s Cupcakes Roppongi Store, Roppongi Hills B1F, 6-4-1 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo

8. Try horse riding at Crane Tokyo

One for the more adventurous and free-spirited women in your life, this spring-limited experience is the perfect mother-daughter (or any other pairs) getaway for this holiday. Crane Tokyo, a horse riding club with branches across Japan, is offering a trial class for two until the end of May at a discounted price. You may need a bit of Japanese to book the class and learn how to move around your horse, but other than that, you’re pretty much ready to go — the price includes equipment, insurance and instruction fees. The class lasts for 30 minutes after which you can head to any other locations on this list!

When: Now until Thu, May 31, 2018.
Where: Crane Tokyo, 1227 Shinkojimachi, Machida, Tokyo
How much: ¥2,980 per person. Book here (Japanese only).

9. Let her enjoy pampering at Elana Jade

Celebrate this Mother’s Day with the one you love by treating them (and yourself, too, if you wish) to a relaxing facial or massage. Organic beauty salon Elana Jade is offering three exclusive offers for the holiday, all valid until the end of May. Choose from Conditioning Facial and Shellac manicure (¥15,500), a 60-min Hot Stone Massage and Shellac Manicure (¥13,500) and Conditioning Facial and 60-min Oil Massage (¥19,000). Other Elana Jade services include organic waxing and spray tanning, as well as nails, eyelash extensions and eyelash tinting. Why not go for a full body overhaul? Go on, your mom deserves it.

This year, the restaurant will be celebrating motherhood with a special dessert and a bouquet of flowers for those who book in advance. Of course, you can stay for a whole meal, too (which we highly recommend). For more info, see the restaurant’s official website here.
