Donald Trump, Kim Jong Un unlikely to discuss U.S. military in South Korea at summit

The United States and North Korea are unlikely to discuss whether to reduce U.S. military forces in South Korea at their first-ever summit, planned to take place in Singapore on June 12, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Saturday.

His remarks came with speculation growing that Washington may consider decreasing the U.S. military presence in South Korea if Pyongyang pledges to achieve complete and verifiable denuclearization.

Mattis made the comments at a question-and-answer session following his speech at the Asia Security Summit in Singapore, known as the Shangri-La Dialogue.
