Indonesian President Joko «Jokowi» Widodo said Saturday his administration will soon apply to host the 2032 Olympic Games.
Indonesia’s success in organizing and hosting the 2018 Asian Games, currently taking place in the national capital Jakarta and in Palembang, the South Sumatra provincial capital, have clearly demonstrated the nation’s capacity to host huge events, the president said.
«With the experience we have already had in organizing the 2018 Asian Games, we, Indonesia, are sure we can and are be able to also host a bigger event,» Jokowi told reporters after meeting International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah at the Bogor Presidential Palace, near Jakarta.
«Therefore, Indonesia plans to bid for being a host for the 2032 Olympic Games as soon as possible,» Jokowi added, without specifying which cities are potential candidate sites.
Bach congratulated Jokowi for «the great success of the Asian Games, which is very, really impressive,» and said «Indonesia has shown that they have all the ingredients to hold the Olympics successfully.»
«Therefore, the International Olympic Committee really appreciates the candidature of Indonesia for the Olympic Games 2032,» Bach said, adding that in Indonesia there is a combination of the friendliness of its people and efficiency and «this is what the Games are about.»
Earlier this week, 2018 Asian Games Organizing Committee President Erick Thohir said Bach chose to attend the closing, not the opening, ceremony of the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday to evaluate Indonesia’s «success» in hosting the event.
Besides Indonesia, India has also expressed serious interest in hosting the 2032 Olympic Games and will bid for the event. In its pitch, India is expected to stress the experience it will gain by hosting the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics and the 2030 Asian Games.
