Japanese PM Abe airs hope for U.S.-N. Korea summit success after talks with Trump

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday, after phone talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, he hopes that the U.S.-North Korea summit will be successful and that it will be the first step toward peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

Abe said Japan and the United States, along with South Korea, are in “complete agreement” over their basic policy toward the summit to be held in Singapore on Tuesday.

Abe and Trump reconfirmed that the U.S. president will raise the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s when he meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
