Putin says wants to conclude postwar peace treaty with Japan by year-end

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he wants to conclude a post-World War II peace treaty with Japan by the end of the year.

The president made the remark during a regional economic forum in Vladivostok attended by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Russia and Japan have not signed a peace treaty due to a territorial dispute over a group of islands off Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido.
