The northern Japan city of Sapporo intends to tell the International Olympic Committee possibly early next week that it plans to give up hosting the Winter Olympics in 2026, a source familiar with the matter said Thursday.
Sapporo is among several cities that have expressed interest in hosting the games. Earlier this year, the city’s head of sports affairs expressed hope that hosting the Games would lead to a surge in inbound tourists.
In April, the committee announced five other cities and an alliance of three Italian cities had expressed an interest in hosting the 2026 Games.
Sapporo, the capital of Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics.
The 2026 host city will be selected at the IOC Session in September 2019 in Milan.
