Suspect arrested in connection with U.S. mail bombs: reports

Federal authorities on Friday arrested a man in Florida in connection with the recent mailing of at least 12 suspected explosive packages to prominent figures, U.S. media reported, citing multiple law enforcement sources.

The news came after authorities reportedly discovered the latest two suspicious packages Friday, one addressed to former National Intelligence Director James Clapper and another to New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker.

The package addressed to Clapper in care of CNN’s New York bureau was found at a Manhattan postal facility, while the parcel to Booker was intercepted in Florida, they said.

A total of 12 packages appearing to contain pipe bombs have been discovered since Monday after being put in the mail to public figures including former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and former first lady Hillary Clinton.

«This is definitely domestic terrorism, no question about it in my mind,» Clapper said in an interview with CNN. «This is not going to silence the administration’s critics.»

U.S. media reported earlier that investigators are following up on leads in Florida, believing that a number of the explosive devices were mailed from the state. None of the devices has so far detonated.

The targeted individuals, also including actor Robert De Niro and CNN, are all critics of President Donald Trump, who still assails Clinton at campaign rallies and routinely calls the cable network «fake news.»
