Swimming: Japanese swimming star Rikako Ikee reveals leukemia diagnosis

Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee, who is considered a strong medal prospect at next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games, on Tuesday revealed she has been diagnosed with leukemia.

The 18-year-old, who holds multiple national records, made the announcement on Twitter after cutting short her training camp in Australia.

«I still can’t believe it and am in a state of confusion,» said Ikee. «But it is also a disease that can be fully cured if treated properly.»

Ikee said she will skip the upcoming national championships in order to undergo treatment.

«I will rest a little and dedicate myself to treatment,» she said.

«Thank you for your encouragement and warm thoughts.»

Ikee shot to fame at last summer’s Asian Games in Jakarta, where she was named the games’ MVP after winning six gold medals.

She holds the Japanese 100-meter freestyle and 50 butterfly records.
