U.S. F-15 fighter crashes into sea off Okinawa, pilot rescued

A U.S. F-15 fighter jet crashed into the sea off Okinawa on Monday morning, with the pilot rescued by a Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter, government sources said.

The F-15, belonging to the U.S. Kadena Air Base, crashed at around 6:40 a.m. about 80 kilometers south of Naha, the prefectural capital of Okinawa, the sources said.

The condition of the rescued pilot, who ejected, was not immediately known, the sources added.

Okinawa hosts the bulk of U.S. military facilities in Japan and the accident is likely to renew concerns among residents about the safety of U.S. military aircraft. An F-15 fighter crashed into the sea off Okinawa in May 2013.
