U.S. Marines fighter jet, tanker plane crash off Japan coast

The U.S. Marines said Thursday an FA-18 jet and a KC-130 tanker plane were «involved in a mishap off the coast of Japan» and that search and rescue operations are under way.

According to U.S. media reports, there were two crew on the fighter jet and five personnel on the tanker plane.

The accident occurred around 2 a.m. and the circumstances are under investigation, the Marines said. No other details were immediately available.

The FA-18 and the KC-130 from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in western Japan were conducting routine training when the mishap occurred, it said.

A Japanese search and rescue aircraft immediately responded to help in recovery efforts, it said.
